Where Most People Live
The equator divides the Earth into two halves: the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. Although the two halves are equal in size, the worlds population is not split evenly between them. The large majority of all humans, commonly estimated at around 90 percent, live in the Northern Hemisphere.
It Comes Down to Land
The main reason is simple: that is where most of the land is. About two-thirds of the Earths land lies north of the equator. The Northern Hemisphere contains all of Europe and North America, most of Asia, and large parts of Africa. The Southern Hemisphere, by contrast, is mostly ocean, with comparatively small landmasses. Since people live on land, they are concentrated where the land is.
A Long History of Settlement
The pattern is reinforced by history. Many of the worlds oldest civilizations and largest population centers grew up in the Northern Hemisphere, and they have continued to grow over thousands of years. The two most populous countries on Earth both lie entirely north of the equator. All of this adds up to a striking imbalance in where humanity makes its home.
