What is the capital of Jamaica?

The Capital of Jamaica

The capital of Jamaica is Kingston. It is also the largest city on the Caribbean island and serves as the nations centre of government, business, and culture. Kingston lies on the southeastern coast, beside one of the largest natural harbours in the world.

Born From a Disaster

Kingston owes its existence to a catastrophe. In 1692, a powerful earthquake destroyed the nearby town of Port Royal, then a notorious haven famous for pirates. Survivors of the disaster moved across the harbour and founded a new settlement on the mainland - and that settlement grew into Kingston.

From Port Royal to Spanish Town to Kingston

Kingston did not become the capital straight away. For a long time, that role belonged to Spanish Town. As Kingston grew into the islands busiest centre of trade thanks to its excellent harbour, it gradually overtook the older capital. Kingston was formally made the capital of Jamaica in 1872, and it remained the capital when Jamaica became an independent country in 1962. Today it is also known as a birthplace of reggae music.
