What is the capital of Thailand?

Thailand's Capital City

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and by far its largest city. Located in the central part of the country on the delta of the Chao Phraya River, it serves as the nation's center of government, business, and culture. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet, drawing millions of international visitors every year to its temples, markets, and street food.

The City With the World's Longest Name

Here is something most people never expect: "Bangkok" is not what Thai people call their own capital. Locals know it as Krung Thep, which translates to "City of Angels." And that is only the short form. The city's full ceremonial name runs to 168 letters, and it holds the Guinness World Record as the longest place name on Earth. The name "Bangkok," used by foreigners, comes from an older name for a small district near the river.

A Capital Born in 1782

Bangkok has not always been Thailand's capital. It rose to that status in 1782, when King Rama I, the founder of the current royal dynasty, moved the seat of government across the river to a more defensible site. The wide bend of the Chao Phraya River acted like a natural moat protecting the new city. The king also built grand temples and palaces there, including the famous Grand Palace, which has housed Thai monarchs ever since.
