What is the largest city in Australia?

Australia's Largest City

Sydney is the largest city in Australia. With well over five million residents, it is home to roughly one in five Australians, and it is also the most populous city in the entire Oceania region. Sydney is the capital of the state of New South Wales and sits on the southeastern coast of the country, wrapped around one of the worlds great natural harbours.

Largest, But Not the Capital

A common surprise is that Sydney, despite being the biggest and most famous Australian city, is not the capital of Australia. That title belongs to Canberra, a smaller, purpose-built city chosen as a compromise. In the early twentieth century, Sydney and Melbourne both wanted to be the national capital. Rather than pick one rival over the other, Australia built an entirely new capital city, Canberra, located between them.

A Global City

Sydney is known around the world for landmarks like its Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and it hosted the Olympic Games in 2000. It is one of the most multicultural cities on Earth, with a large share of its residents born overseas. It overtook Melbourne as Australias most populous city in the early twentieth century and has held that position ever since.
