A Country With No Coast
Most large countries have a coastline, a border that meets the sea. But some countries are completely surrounded by land, with no direct access to an ocean at all. These are called landlocked countries. The largest of them all, a truly enormous nation without a coast, is Kazakhstan.
Where Kazakhstan Lies
Kazakhstan is located in Central Asia. It is a giant of a country, ranking among the ten largest nations in the world by area, and it is by far the biggest landlocked one. It is bordered by several countries, including Russia to the north and China to the east. Despite its massive size, it has no border with any open ocean, which is what makes its status as a landlocked country so striking.
What Landlocked Means
A landlocked country is one that is entirely enclosed by land, or whose coastlines only touch closed seas, with no direct route to the open ocean. This can create real challenges. Countries with coastlines can use seaports to ship goods cheaply around the world. Landlocked countries must instead move their goods overland, through neighboring countries, to reach a port. This often makes trade more complicated and more expensive.
A Land of Wide Open Spaces
Kazakhstan's vast territory is filled with enormous open landscapes. Much of the country is covered by the steppe, a huge, mostly flat grassland that stretches as far as the eye can see. It also contains deserts and mountain regions. Because the country is so large but its population is relatively small, Kazakhstan has one of the lowest population densities in the world, meaning vast areas of land with very few people.
