The Worlds Longest Sea Crossing
The longest sea crossing in the world is the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, in southern China. Stretching for about 55 kilometres, it connects three places: Hong Kong, the city of Zhuhai, and Macau. It opened in 2018 after about nine years of construction.
More Than Just a Bridge
Although it is usually called a bridge, this crossing is really a combined system of bridges and a tunnel. For most of its length it runs as a bridge over the sea, but partway across it dips below the water as an undersea tunnel. This was done so that large ships could still pass through the busy shipping lanes overhead. Two artificial islands were built in the sea to connect the bridge sections to the tunnel.
Cutting the Travel Time
The crossing dramatically shortened travel in the region. Before it opened, getting between Hong Kong and the cities on the other side took hours by road or about an hour by ferry. The new crossing cut that journey down to well under an hour by car. It is widely regarded as a remarkable feat of modern engineering.
