What is the world’s smallest ocean?

The Smallest Ocean

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest of the worlds oceans. It is also the shallowest. It sits at the very top of the globe, surrounding the North Pole, and is largely enclosed by the northern coasts of North America, Europe, and Asia.

An Ocean of Ice

What sets the Arctic Ocean apart, beyond its size, is its ice. For much of the year a large part of its surface is covered by floating sea ice. In the cold winter months the ice spreads and thickens, and in the warmer summer months some of it melts back. This icy character makes the Arctic Ocean unlike the warmer, more open oceans further south.

Small but Important

Even though it is the smallest ocean, the Arctic Ocean plays a big role in the planets systems. It helps regulate the global climate, and its bright ice reflects sunlight back into space. The ocean is also home to specially adapted wildlife. Its small size compared to giants like the Pacific does not make it any less important to the health of the Earth.
