Which U.S. state has no documented venomous snakes?

A State Without Venomous Snakes

Many people are afraid of venomous snakes, so it may be comforting to know that one U.S. state has none at all. That state is Alaska. While venomous snakes such as rattlesnakes are found across much of the United States, Alaska stands apart. It has no documented venomous snakes anywhere within its borders, which makes it unique among the fifty states.

No Snakes at All

The reason Alaska has no venomous snakes is striking: it has essentially no wild snakes of any kind. Most U.S. states are home to a variety of snake species, some harmless and some venomous. Alaska is the only state with no native snake population at all. There are no rattlesnakes, no copperheads, and in fact almost no snakes slithering through its wilderness. The occasional snake reported in Alaska is almost always an escaped or released pet, not a wild animal.

Why Snakes Cannot Survive There

The explanation comes down to climate. Snakes are cold-blooded, which means they cannot generate their own body heat and must rely on warmth from their surroundings. Alaska's climate is simply too cold for them. The winters are long and brutally freezing, and even the summers are too short to give snakes the sustained warmth they need to survive, hunt, and reproduce. After the last Ice Age, snakes were never able to spread back into the region as they did elsewhere.

Other Snake-Free Corners

Alaska is the most famous example, but it is not entirely alone. Hawaii also has no native land snakes, mostly because it is a remote group of islands that snakes never managed to reach naturally. A few other states, while they do have snakes, have no venomous ones. But for a place with no venomous snakes and barely any snakes at all, Alaska remains the clearest example, a vast wilderness kept snake-free by its powerful cold.
